Yer I was going to buy one but wanted more length of coax - thought my bolt and tape base would be the cheapest way

I will probably buy a pre-built base from ebay when I sort out another radio and put that antenna on my vehicle.

I am going to make a mast and put my bolt base up high as I can - I have another antenna to put on it just as a receiver  Smoking

From what I can see, the best place for it is the junk box.

It's a water trap - water / moisture fucks things up and makes for inconstancy. (which explains a lot my end)

I'd say the swr is off the scale, as the total length has been increased anywhere from 10mm to 40mm depending
on where you terminated (connected) the coax under all that chewy and sticky tape.

Good RG58-U coax at Jaycar is about $1.50 a meter.

A proper mobile base is $12

I have spare plugs.

Then again for a few dollars more there's a 4db aerial, 5 meters coax, magnetic base and Gayofag connector for $25

Looks like that's a normal base mounted through a metal plate that could be
removed and mounted in a hole in ya tin roof (best ground plane) or on an L bracket on a pole.
