Yeah ya could buy more 5v cells, but won't that get messy mounting them all?  Read2

Stick 'em onto a big flat board or roof with silicon I suppose. Gotta keep water out.

Basic, waterproof and tidy 12v 10watt panel free postage from NSW is $23

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MINI-10W-SOLA...Sw41xXO6b2

The 12v 0.58A current should at least double when converted down to 5v (need  Wood_chop input here)

But even so, 1 amp isn't really enough.

I have a spare 12v 10amp max solar regulator here ya can have for free if needed.

I just looked at that solar panel.

Its 10 watts PEAK.

And by my calculations more like about 8 odd watts.

Look at the photo of the back of it, output voltage 17.4 volts and current 0.47 amps, gives around 8.2 watts in full midday summer sunlight.

The 21 odd volts is unloaded IE no current being drawn. Maximum power output point is the 17 odd volts.

Drop that by around a third for average output over a day.

Those little switching converters are around 90 odd percent efficient so 8.2 watts in looses 10 percent being converted to 5 volts out so you'd get 7.4 odd watts or about 1.5 amps out at 5 volts.

I'd get at least a 40 watt panel if you want to draw 2 odd amps out with a switching converter.

The little ua / lm 7805 have really poor efficiency at those currents and voltages, basically the difference in input voltage, up to 21 odd volts in this case, and output voltage, 5 volts, is WASTED as HEAT  and you get NO extra current output from that which you put in, IE 0.47 amps in this case.

My thoughts anyway  Debilos-1

Marget that  Wood_chop

In an earlier PM I suggested a 40 watt panel as well.

7 doesn't what to spend too much in case the thieves nick it all.

I hear Dicksmith workers need jobs, and work for peanuts.

A new flea collar, water bowl and a months supply of Chum might tempt one
to play security guard for a while?

Tears
I can just picture a bald skinny tooth pick security guard trying to fend of thieves.

Ahh yes anyone even an unemployed bald skinny guy with a camel toe would be effective against the piss weak thieves

I like that panel for $22 odd - maybe look into buying just as a battery charger

I currently use a vintage solar panel rescued from the rubbish many years ago - pumps out about 36v in full sun until its hooked up to a battery. Its still good enough to keep a big 4b battery charged with the 12v fridge running for a week.

More Phillipino $1 solar panels i reckon

Yeah stick 'em on good so the little buggers don't bother stealing them.

Just gotta make sure water doesn't contact the wires in the back.

Keep an eye out for a nice secondhand clear sheet of perspex
ta cover them with.

I think I still have the front of a 42 inch sony TV here ya can have.

It's just an alloy frame with the glass.
I'll get the whipper snipper out tomorrow and see if I can find it under the Singapore daisy.

I was going to buy a 100 watt DIY kit and make my own with it,
but the ready to go jobs got real cheap and bought one instead.

Damn fast little buggers and CHEAP.

Might just have to play me thinks.

Looks to me like it might be what you were after too cooter a fast little PC that runs from a fleas fart.

Fark, the dudes voice was annoying. I couldn't watch it all.

H3 chip going to run YouTube etc through Firefox without all the fricking around?

It's the only thing stopping me getting another one.

I reckon some of these with cameras on them would use less power and do
a good job as remote security cameras.

Price is good at $10 each.

I got three
I have just wired them up to a usb plug and have out in the sun. Plug my internet dongle in - it tries to power up but it is lacking amps to keep it alive

Merror

Back to the Philipines for some more panels - I reckon another 3 will give 1 full amp - should be enough to run it, then I need 6 more to power the WIFI camera
